The Collegiate Times is an independent, student-run newspaper serving Virginia Tech since 1903. The Educational Media Company at Virginia Tech (EMCVT), a non-profit student media consortium, owns the publication. Based in Blacksburg, Virginia, the Collegiate Times publishes local news, sports, features and opinions for 5,000 print readers every Tuesday of the academic year and prints weekly summer editions. The Collegiate Times represents the only daily newspaper produced in Blacksburg and also provides its content online via its website, mobile app, and various social media outlets.
Michaela is the editor-in-chief of The Collegiate Times for the 2025-2026 school year. She first joined the paper in August 2022 as a lifestyles writer before stepping into leadership roles—becoming assistant lifestyles editor in January 2023 and later, lifestyles editor in January 2024.
In these roles, Michaela has led weekly team meetings, pitched and edited stories to meet AP Style standards and collaborated with fellow editors in production meetings, all while continuing to write for the publication. As editor-in-chief, she will oversee all editorial content across sections, manage publication schedules, update the biweekly newsletter, and coordinate the print layout process. She will also play a key role in event planning for campus engagements like Gobblerfest and Gobblerfair, ensuring The Collegiate Times remains a dynamic voice for the student body.
